I second the Stixrud recommendation, and note that our insurance never reimbursed us regardless of diagnosis.
Also, your child's experience is unusual. ADHD is typically found during childhood. My severely inattentive son (who was tentatively diagnosed at 6, then confirmed at 10) had a much harder time in high school than in college, actually. But his high school workload was very demanding and comparatively his college is slightly easier.
