Stixrud still reigns supreme it seems.

Of course. The batteries of psychological tests they use are normed for different age groups and they will use the appropriate ones.

A lot of stimulant abuse starts in college, too. Need for night-long study sessions, etc.

And hasn’t he only been in college for like 3 weeks?

Also agree with Stixrud. I have two kids who weren’t diagnosed until high school due to the rising academic expectations that superseded their executive functioning. In retrospect, there were other signs all along the way, but I didn’t know enough to recognize them.

It is expensive, and takes a while to get an appointment…but they are very good.
They give you a thorough, professional report afterwards.

(And, somewhat ironically, I think if you get a diagnosis of ADD, insurance reimburses you for part of it.)

I second the Stixrud recommendation, and note that our insurance never reimbursed us regardless of diagnosis.

Also, your child's experience is unusual. ADHD is typically found during childhood. My severely inattentive son (who was tentatively diagnosed at 6, then confirmed at 10) had a much harder time in high school than in college, actually. But his high school workload was very demanding and comparatively his college is slightly easier.

Dr. Colleen Blanchfield in Reston, VA is the best.
She's knowledgeable and caring. I've never had a doctor be so thorough.

Good luck!

for 18 yr old DS. College freshman who feels like his "brain short circuits". It seems to me he's describing inattentive ADHD and it's taken until college courses to bring the issues to light. I think the starting point is a full evaluation and looking for recommendations. Thanks.
