Queens has 1300 undergrads and requires all to live on campus. I wonder if they'll eventually become Elon in Charlotte undergrads and earn an Elon degree.

It’s grad programs, not undergrad.

One of the pillars of Elon's educational approach is experiential learning. Expanding into Charlotte through Queens, where Elon already offers its own programming, should only improve its ability to offer internships, develop corporate partnerships, and offer research opportunities.

Having a presence in Charlotte also makes Elon more attractive for those undergraduates who thought its location was too remote.

This is excerpt families got for those interested. Seems to be for graduate programs and great place to be in Charlotte.

Today we are sharing information about an exciting new chapter in Elon University’s history. Elon University has formally entered into planning discussions with the goal of a merger with Queens University of Charlotte.

After a planning period and regulatory approvals, Elon University will assume operation of Queens — a 30-acre campus in the Myers Park neighborhood of Charlotte. At this location, Elon will expand support for graduate programs that will add to the university's ability to offer graduate education in one of the nation's fastest-growing cities.

Queens was in a death spiral so Elon saved them. Queens was downgraded to BBB- (just above investment grade) earlier this year. I don't know how the two will integrate since they are 75-100 miles apart. I think Elon was likely better off sticking to its knitting but perhaps the deal was too good to turn down. But running a multi-location school is not easy and creates some confusion among applicants.

Perhaps Elon will take the Queens name to get rid of the damage done by Elon. Or use it as an opportunity to start with a completely different name. Like JuanCarlos or Murray or Tze.

Queen Elon University

Or Elon’s Queens University.

Queens used to be all women when I grew up there in the 70s and 80s. They have a good nursing program, also social work. I hope Elon will keep these programs.

I mean, it kind of makes sense. Charlotte is a big and growing city, but currently doesn’t have much as far as prominent or selective universities go, so maybe they are being smart by filling a void.

I guess Charlotte has Davidson just to the north, but that attracts a different pool of students from Elon and Queens.

Is Elon, often still considered a safety, strong enough to pull this off? The lifeguard has to be strong to pull a sinking person out of the water.

I wouldn't know about Elon or the university it bought specifically, but it is common for universities to first seek more revenue by expanding the class. Class size is dependent on physical facilities, so buying a nearby campus is a fast way to expand the class. It does likely come with some risk.
