A really strong choice if the student doesn’t hate the urban-integrated campus.

OP please answer these questions for viable suggestions from us

1. which state do you live in
2. is budget a consideration
3. what are your DD's strengths / Ecs and outside interests
4. Should she be far from home or close by?

School spirit and will accept a test optional student with an unweighted GPA in the range of 3.0 to 3.3: less-selective public universities, and that would include many state flagships.

OP, right now your job is to decide what you can afford to spend per year. Public universities don't give need-based aid to out of state students and your student is not going to have an academic record that would get merit scholarships.

Use the Net Price Calculator at your own in-state public universities to see if they are affordable. Check the cost of attendance at some out of state flagships to see if you can afford them. If you tell us your annual budget, posters here will be happy to recommend some.

Any of the big publics -
Colorado Boulder
Penn State
Indiana
JMU
Southern schools like Auburn, South Carolina, Alabama.

The more selective big publics will be out (Wisconsin, UMD, Michigan etc)

Depending on where you live and how close you want your kid, there are many other options too. Endless choices really.

Since you’re just getting started on the process, I highly recommend Jeff Selingo’s books - “Who Gets in and Why” and “Dream Schools.” They’ll give you lots of insights into the process and how to look for good-fit schools.

OP, your kid will actually have a lot of options. You/she should start thinking about location and type of school to help narrow things down - how far away are you willing to go? Within a certain drive time? Willing to fly? Does she like DC area weather or would she prefer it to be warmer or colder? Consider visiting a few schools during spring break to get a sense of how she feels about schools in a city, suburban, or rural, etc. Is money a factor?

DP. What is your issue? 10th isn’t too early to start thinking about this. DC’s private school has a 10th grade college night in October to kick off the process.

No need to get obsessive about it, but perfectly reasonable to start getting familiar with college options.

A) It is early
B) The post was remarkably vague
C) This board is to add value for more detailed, nuanced questions. Vaguely asking for people to help you start your list is a waste and if everyone did it, this place would get out of hand.
D) I guess I can just choose to ignore the post so perhaps I over-reacted, but as noted in C, I am trying to pre-empt countless posts like this drowning out the meaningful ones. Though those often tend to get ruined by ignorant people with agendas or trying to be comedians. But I digress.

Best of luck to the OP.

hi DCUM! My daughter is a sophomore. She has ADHD and typically earns B/B+ grades. When we asked her counselor about college fit, she explained that those conversations usually begin junior year and encouraged her to keep doing her best. She also noted that many colleges are now test optional, which could be a good route since standardized tests have always been a challenge.

In the meantime, we’re trying to get a head start on researching good-fit schools. Ideally, she’d love a college with strong school spirit and a student body of 5,000+ students. She’s involved in clubs and plays soccer (though not at the D1 level). Are there schools you’d recommend we consider adding to our list?
