https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2025/09/03/dc-car-crash-text-experiment/

I thought this story was really interesting. They sent warnings to drivers who they identified as high risk based on camera violations. The warnings didn’t work, but it says they correctly identified 65% of the cars involved in collisions over a 12 month period.

I don’t totally get what that statistic meant but given that collisions involve two vehicles and often only one is at fault, that seems like a crazy high success rate.

I think the evolution of the cameras should be from revenue stream to identifying and restricting dangerous drivers. But I know that will cause a lot of privacy/due process problems. To me though, we already heavily regulate who can drive and under what terms and it feels like we should be taking more of those drivers off the road rather than just fining them.

Talk to the Mayor and her administration. She’s a Black woman living east of the park who has been in power for a decade.

More like talk to the city council...

Hard to see what difference it's made to safety. Here's how many people the police say were killed each year in DC by speeding drivers:

2023: 22
2022: 9
2021: 12
2020: 15
2019: 10
2018: 9
2017: 12
2016: 8
2015: 11
2014: 12
2013: 11

Not really seeing a pattern.

There aren't many cities in the entire world that have made more aggressive use of traffic cameras than DC. It's a legitimate question what, if anything, it has accomplished.

Do you know how much money was actually collected on these tickets?

There's 17 speed cameras in Ward 3. In Ward 7, there's almost 60.

The learning curve for some drivers is a flat line.

It's about the money. Watch the number of tickets go up to replace the $1 billion Trump withdrew from the city.

1) People might be driving worse and worse, resulting in more tickets. (More cell-phone use while driving.)

2) The biggest impact may be on non-fatal accidents.

Possibilities.

Evidence? Seems more likely that this is a just a money grab that has little bearing on safety.

Have you paid your tickets?

Are you kidding? You can just avoid the roads with cameras and go as fast as you want.
