OP. They’re 8x10 and would be super heavy when wet, plus I don’t have a driveway or outdoor space conducive to something like this. That’s what I opted to pay so much to get it done professionally, and why it’s so annoying that the rugs look the same. It was over $1200 for 4 rugs.

Well, I guess wait and see when they come back. Hopefully it will be better. I don’t think of them as being super good at stain removal, more just a general wash. If you don’t have an extractor at home, you should get one (bissel or whatever). The little ones are great for stains and being prompt is critical imo.

OP. To be clear, my main issue with them wasn’t stain removal. I have one of those Bissell things and do use it promptly and had only a few tiny spots that I wanted them to work on. The issue is that the rugs came back looking pretty much the same. Like a PP said, it was enough to make me wonder if they had been washed at all.

Also, for those commenting on cost of pickup/delivery - they did offer a discount if I did this myself, but it wasn’t significant.

It’s been my experience that some rugs just end up with dirt embedded in the fibers and then it doesn’t wash out well. Idk if it’s about the type of wool or the amount of lanolin or what. But I’m a knitter so I know “wool” is a giant category with a ton of natural variation and then a lot of variation from processing and dyeing. Some of my rugs wear like iron and some end up hard to clean. But I hope they come back looking better.

NP. I get that, but not an insignificant part of this cost is probably the pick up and return of these rugs. Assuming two guys to pick up/deliver four 8X10 rugs - they'd have to budget about 5-6 labor hours before they even begin to clean. They're probably taking a bath on doing it a second time.

From here its tough to determine what was a set stain and what wasn't.

I'm that PP and I agree, I don't find the cost of cleaning unreasonable but this thread has made me think I will ask them for a quote on running it through again. Like while it's still wet, running it again through the wash, rinse and spin cycles. I just feel like more dirt will come out and I wouldn't mind paying for it, because to your point a huge part of the cost is pickup and delivery and this would hopefully only add a little more labor and utilities cost.

DP but you can’t really do this with a wool rug any bigger than 4x6 because it will just be too heavy and hard to dry. The reason you send it out is they have a big room with drains and a machine that spins most of the water out, and they have a room with fans where they can hang them to dry.

Oh lol they actually do video it, on Instagram at ayoub_n.h you can see rugs go through the machines. Idk maybe next time I’ll ask if they can run them twice. I feel like the answer is some might just need more time getting washed.

Mainly though some of my rugs just wash better. Old flattish wool orientals come back looking clean. I have a more plush, newer oushak one that just doesn’t somehow.

OP. Interesting, thanks. Mine were all pretty flat/low pile, so it feels like they should have looked better than they did. Also, so frustrating that they can’t be consistent. It’s so expensive that it honestly makes more sense financially to buy an IKEA rug and just replace it every couple of years.

They should video it all, and then we would be able to see. Because I’m sure a lot of soiling is just hard to remove. Once dirt is worked into the fibers, etc. But I do also feel like sometimes that just means they should have taken more time. Let it soak, agitate more, etc.

I just had some rugs (3 wool, 1 cotton) sent out to be cleaned. They came back today and look the same as they did before. It doesn’t even look to me like they tried to get some very minor stains out of one of them. They are still very clearly dirty (difference in color between the areas that have been walked on and those that were covered by furniture, for example).

The company picked them back up and has offered to redo them, but I’m wondering if anyone else has ever had this experience? Maybe I just had unrealistic expectations, but when I’m paying $250-400 per rug, I expect it to come back to me looking close to immaculate.
