Who does this? Fridge? So weird

Most Americans store onions and potatoes in the fridge because we don't have a need to store an entire season's worth of food in our root cellar.

I know you're supposed to store potatoes and onions outside the fridge, but they always sprout and spoil when I do it. I guess my house is too warm/humid, even in the winter. For that reason, I store them in the fridge, together, because there isn't really enough space to keep them apart. The onions keep pretty well but the potatoes have to be used within 2-3 weeks or they turn softer and sweet tasting. (Not spoiled, but not the freshest.)

The bins above will not breathe properly for root storage. You need something with lots of air holes on the bottom or moisture will build up and they will spoil. That's why wire baskets work so well. I love the ones you can hang from the ceiling.

“Cool and dark” so they last longer. And in the store they aren’t refrigerated.

These rules are only if you need them to last a while. I usually buy just enough for a meal or 2, so will be cooking them within a couple of days- so I store them together in pantry.

After you cut them, they should be put in the fridge; but air tight container - not loose in the crisper.

My mom taught me
-in the dark pantry, low if you can
-potatoes and onions not near each other

So it’s funny when I see pantry systems, and they’re all nice and new and organized and the onions and potatoes are together.

For the record, mine are near-ish bc I don’t have a big pantry.

Well dang, I guess I could not stack them and store them on opposite ends of my pantry.

I’ve read they should be a couple feet apart.

Or is this too close together? I'd put this in my kitchen pantry.
