I wouldn’t, too risky, Bart tends to break down a lot. Go to terminal 1, it’s beautiful and their food is the best. I recommend Bourbon pub.

I do the SF to Asia leg a lot and I used to live in SF and Oak and with a 5 hr layover I'd just hunker down in the lounge

Time of day does matter a bit, along with knowing if your 2nd flight is international. But generally, on weekdays it's 30 minutes on the BART to downtown SF, and trains run every 10 minutes or so. Some parts of the airport are a 5 minute walk to the airport BART station (A, F and G concourses), others require a 5-10 minute ride on the little airport train to get to the BART station. So you could be in downtown SF 50-60 minutes after walking off your plane, now 4 hours to flight. Spend 2 hours there, now 2 hours to flight. 45 minutes to get back, you have 75 minutes. No issues if it's a domestic flight, might want an extra 20 minutes if a bigger international flight which boards earlier.

Yes or go to Embarcadero stop (last stop before BART crosses the bay) and go to the Ferry Building for a meal and walking along the bay path. Simple, safe, good views and good food.

If you are traveling without a carry on, then sure. You could Uber, take BART to Millbrae and then Caltrain in or take BART straight in. I’m not a fan of the BART stops in SF, SF is amazing and the grime is concentrated unfortunately near where the BART station lets out. It’s not dangerous just doesn’t give you the amazing beauty of SF.

I’d pick one thing or area to see SFMOMA, de Young, Embarcadero etc

BART is your best bet, as there's no risk of getting stuck in traffic. Pick a stop along red/yellow lines so you don't need to change.

SFO? There’s lots of great food in SF. You could take BART to the Mission and get a burrito.
