Some colleges have some suite-style housing where a bathroom is attached to a small number of bedrooms, whether the bedrooms are shared or not.

This is still asking a lot for most university housing.

When you get there, the RA will have your kid’s name on a sign on the door. If your kid’s name is on the left, left-hand bed. Right, right-hand bed.

It’s funny that at the elite schools you can’t buy yourself a better dorm, they don’t want that disparity.

When I was a freshman, my roommate got there first. She picked the bed that was stable. I got the one tilted at a 45 degree angle to the floor. As I had flown out to Stanford alone, I figured out how to get the wheel casing back on the bed leg by myself.

OP, the process for housing selection depends entirely on the college. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

For many private universities, for freshman housing, you might be able to provide some preferences, though ultimately, the college gives you what it wants to give you.

For older students, often there is a housing selection process in the spring for the following school year. Students may be randomly (or not randomly) assigned a "pick time" when they can select a specific room.

I would strongly suggest not getting too wrapped up in trying to get the "best" possible dorm. Life is full of unexpected surprises.

For private schools, it's something like this:

- Big donor/board member's kids get the newest dorms
- kids with documented (and medical note) allergies or medical conditions get newer AC dorms
- Financial aid kids often get their last choice....

If you want a good dorm as a freshman go to a lower ranked school that needs to attract students, usually in south as newer.

I never heard of “Honors College”- so kids with top grades, high school honor student's, get better, first choice dorms?

Ways to get better dorms:

1) Strategically set room preferences to align with what you want (don't ask for a single if they don't have them in the dorm area you prefer, in some cases prioritize a triple).

2) Register for housing early/on time

3) Apply to be in the Honors College or interest house with a known desired location

It is school dependent

For some schools, honor college has better options
For some schools, they prioritize housing selection based on when you made your housing deposit /actual deposit
For some schools it is random
