Why wouldn’t you let them? There’s a ton of growing and brain development going on. They need rest to do that.

For my kids who sleeps the latest, if they sleep super late on Sunday then they don’t fall asleep Sunday night and Monday morning disaster.

That was me. Probably not just me, but my kids could go downstairs, eat a pre-breakfast snack I had prepared and watch TV, until I woke up. When I woke up, the screens went off. We started this when they about 4.

Why is it a problem? Everybody gets up at 6:15, then. No need to tiptoe around.

Early rising is a body in alignment with its optimal natural state. It should be encouraged. Those in the household who are struggling to rise early should be getting to bed earlier.

What are they allowed to do if they wake up early?
If the two early risers are playing quietly together I feel like the only issue is them going into the room of the sleeping 4yo.
Address that issue but you can’t expect young children who are awake to just stay in bed, it’s not fair. I mean, I guess you could force them to, I just feel like they should be allowed to get up as long as they don’t disturb others.

My kids are older now and my strict rule has always been to not wake me up unless there is blood, an injury/sickness or an intruder. (Joking a little). You should make that rule. Your 10 yo can get up whenever but shouldn’t be waking anyone up at that age.

Now mine are teens and sleep but the same rule applies, just to their late nights when I want to go to bed and they are all up. So the sleep times did change in our house in middle school.

I am usually able to go back to sleep. DH sleeps right through the whole thing. I can hear them upstairs and I know the potential for loud noises and escalation so I try to stay ahead of it. I go up and separate them, remind them they’re not supposed to be playing together at 6am, I go back to sleep.

It's the opposite problem of most parents of young adults!

How is a problem?

My oldest is 10 and has always been an early riser…even on the weekends. In fact, he wakes up earlier on the weekends. During the week can be a struggle. Should I give up that they’ll ever sleep in? Is 6am our wake up time?

We’ve been going through the same things for 10 years with no success…don’t wake up a sleeping brother, don’t wake me up, stay in your room, no lights on, green lights, clocks in room, etc. Consequences and rewards and stickers and more.

But here we are, 6:15 on a Sunday, and the older two are playing and woke up the 4 year old. They were playing quietly, but the 10 year STILL went into the other room with a sleeping person.

I’m the definition of sanity: I keep doing what I’m doing with the same result.
