At Princeton, faculty and staff get $22,000 per year for each kid for any college. So benefit is the same if the kid goes to Princeton or any other school.

At a friend's university, students of professors get tuition benefits, but the university gives them begrudgingly, so it might be even harder to get in.

Future NYC mayor Mamdani didn't get into Columbia even though his dad was a professor there. He was applying from Bronx Science and ended up at Bowdoin so clearly wasn't stupid (not trying to hijack this to become a political discussion).

There are consortiums of colleges that provide a tuition discount to the faculty and staff of other colleges. I know a number of families that qualify for this b/c they are staff at universities, not faculty. One example is Georgetown. But I couldn’t tell you what the other colleges are that it applies to.

Of course it helps with admissions. It’s a job perk and a hook. The money depends on the school.

I believe the Harvard admissions court case found that having g Harvard professor parents does help with Harvard admissions.

My university is part of a consortium and kids can get a tuition break at any college in the consortium. My friend's son is now in college. What ended up happening was the tuition deal for professors is a fixed amount, much lower than full pay. But, it doesn't take into consideration financial need. It is the same for all employees because it has to be a fair and equal employment benefit. My friend is a full professor and her husband is a chef. When they filled out the paperwork for financial aid at the school he is attending, the cost was lower with financial aid then with the tuition benefit. For a lot of college professors, their income is low enough that its not a great deal. For the few married to a high income earner, its a nice benefit.

In general yes or at least partially. This is highly school specific you will have to check your school's policy as to how much.

If you qualified for a free admission, wouldn’t that be the opposite of a hook, because the university is losing tuition money on you?
