Depends on the day and the time of day. Our stop has some shady characters hanging about so I have some anxiety over it.

Honestly, I am. Because in this culture the people who would ask this question without specifying their race, which is relevant, are white.

Not yet but I hope to have my 13 year old be riding independently by this summer.

Yes. Thousands of DC kids (including my two teens) ride metro every day. What are your concerns? Where is your kid going?

Depends on the age and the route, but in most cases yes.
My kids at 13 were riding the metro during daytime hours, on routes we agreed to. So, they might have come home from school, or gone to an extra curricular activity, or one of my kids would ride to the zoo because he really liked it.
My kids at 15, ride to more variety of destinations, and do their own planning, but I'll still pick up if it's late and they would be alone. They have different levels of environmental, and aren't the same sex, and that impacts where that line is where I pick up.
By 16 or 17 they go anywhere they want.

I was riding the Paris metro alone to go to my middle school, like many kids. The DC metro is much safer, I think. But if your children are not US citizens, then you might want to rethink for the duration of ICE presence in DC.

Of course. And if you’re smart OP, you’ll not only allow your teen to ride Metro but teach him or her how to do it effectively and efficiently.

13 year old rides metro regularly through rush hour. We live in NW DC. She mostly rides the Red Line in DC and MD, if that matters.

Yup - my 11 and 13 year old are able to ride independently. Make sure they know what direction to go and pay attention to their surroundings/not be glued to a phone (for the 13 year old, 11 year old does not have a phone).
