My 10 year old does often drink protein shakes before or after sports practices. But he is a big kid and doesn't need to gain weight. He is just hungry and its easy quick calories.

Op here - oldest is a girl. She is about 4’8” tall give or take.

There it is. She couldn’t be more average for height and weight. They match perfectly. Sometimes prepubescent bodies look weird or have skinny long limbs. There’s no problem

Agree that sounds on the healthy side of skinny. Its probably not a problem unless she is telling you she is hungry or low energy.

My two older kids (11 and 9 years old) have 3 days of practices and one game a week. They do not keep weight on well and the older one has started losing weight.

They love their sports and I don’t want them to quit. Do I try and do things like protein shakes? Oldest one only weighs 76 pounds and younger one weighs 70 pounds.

You don’t put their height down so the weights aren’t helpful on their own. You didn’t put the sports which also matter. Ice hockey will burn a ton of calories, others not so much at their ages.

Op - sorry I wrote in precious response. Mostly worried about oldest daughter. She is 4’8” (give or take) and weighs 76 pounds. She is doing soccer and track.

Op - at one point when DD was little (5ish years old) she got sick and lost 6 pounds in a week. I gave her bagels with cream cheese every morning to bring her weight back up. Maybe I should do that again.

I feel like it’s a weird situation to be in since a lot of kids start packing on the pounds pre-puberty but we are going in the opposite direction.

Will definitely bring it up at her next pediatrician visit. We have done weight checks in the past.

13 yr old DS has 6 practices a week for soccer (M-Th for school team, T/Th for travel team) and then 1 game on Saturday for his travel team.

Historically, he's never really had much fluctuation in weight between his really busy seasons (summer/fall) and his less busy season (winter) with spring being in the middle. He tends to up his food intake on his own when he's really active and his appetite isn't as much when he's not.

The hardest part is he takes after me and breakfast when he's tired makes him nauseous. Thankfully lunch is ridiculously early but even then he may only eat half his lunch. Then he packs a high protein/carb snack to either eat before practice or in between practices. Our dinners are a pretty healthy mix of protein, carbs, and veggies.

Snacking isn't off limits, we've just taught him the importance of different foods needed for how active he is. A pretty common snack that the makes is tuna stuffed inside sticky rice and wrapped in seaweed.

I make heavy snacks, often leftover from dinner, and they eat dinner when they get home.

They play club 4-5x a week and rec 2x a week when we’re in season.

No issues here until HS sports. My very thin DD couldn't keep up with enough calories and her period always stopped during the season. Before that it was just twice a week practice and once a week games.

OP - I am mostly worried about my oldest. The other one is still gaining weight although slower than before. Oldest is skinny and it takes A LOT for me to get weight on her.

She just started doing soccer and track at the same time. So lots of heavy exercise and running.

I was lucky if she gained 1-2 pounds a year for the past 8 years. Now I am worried we are going to backtrack. She eats well but just not a ton. Very balanced diet. At this point do I just let her eat anything as long as she is getting calories in?

I had a tall skinny kid who used to require a TON of calories. Basically, make everything count. For breakfast, scrambled eggs and avocado toast. For lunch, pack him a turkey sandwich with cheese and an apple with pb. Snack is hummus or apple and pb or berries and a cheese wedge. Dinner -- chicken or chili or meatballs with a salad and some pasta or rice.

Whenever you can get him to add a 4th meal, give him a mix of protein and carbs. Leftovers are great. My swimmer was a huge fan of second breakfast, which was usually a ridiculous number of eggs and an apple (or pancakes if it was the weekend). Peanut butter sandwiches were very portable. Same with hard boiled eggs.

If the sports are cardio intensive, like swimming or running or higher level soccer, you will want to up the carbs before practice for energy.

How do you handle dinner? When mine was heavy in sports we did small dinner before sport and then a heavy snack after sport.

4 days a week but he is growing steadily so I’m not concerned. My 11 year old is 71 lbs but that’s very much on track for his growth chart — mom and dad aren’t big people.

Talk to your pediatrician.
