I don’t personally know anything about Dickinson, but I’ve heard good things. I have a a child at Elon. They’ve won best undergrad teaching for I think the past four years. They do a lot right. The faculty and students are close and it’s encouraged. There is always some sort of faculty coffee or take professors to lunch going on. One thing I appreciate when they were a freshman was the amount of programming. There is always something going on at campus and it’s well publicized. Even little things like a cooking class or dorm neighborhood events. They get them out of their rooms and I appreciated that as getting to know people. Loads of clubs, they had to scale back after doing too much, but didn’t want to as they loved them all.

My kids is at Dickinson and really dislikes it. I don't think that's really the fault of the school though. He's an athlete and was recruited to play there--he said there's a huge difference in the type of kids who attend to play sports there vs the ones who attend because they really liked the school. I can't elaborate so pls don't ask me to.

He does seem to be getting a good education and does have good grades and plenty of friends FWIW.

Yes, this was same for my kid. They all
gave around $35k, Elon was less initially and then another scholarship later with a speciality program. Their starting cost is lower, so they were all essentially a wash.

My class of 24 kid applied to both and got great merit. Dickinson gave $35,000, bringing COA down to around 43. Elon gave a total of around $25,000 (presidential, fellows, then another late grant) bringing it down to a similar 45. He chose UTK for the school spirit and large school opportunities and loves it but both were great options.

my dd graduated from dickinson in 2022. she loved it, was super involved and had a job directly after graduation from an alum. she really had the opportunity to get to know her professors and she is still in touch / active in the school today

Could you please share the amount of the merit award?

Mine applied to both as well as some other similarly ranked mid-size privates. They all gave merit in proportion to starting cost and came in very close to one another. They ended up at Elon and are very happy. It was a hard decision, but more convenient location and a specialty program won out. The school provides an excellent student experience. The irony is my other kid is at a huge endowment school, and Elon does so much for quality of life on campus.

Elon had a huge decline in enrollment this past year and layoffs. Do a search for the article.

Dickinson is fantastic, particularly for social sciences (econ, psychology, IR)!

Any thoughts of one over the other? Pros/cons or recent experiences? Thanks.
