Subject: What mantras do you wish you’d shared with your kids?
Two that my family had growing up that I hope to pass on to my children-
"What is the most generous interpretation?" - Serves as a general reminder to look for the good in people and assume that even if someone did something you didn't agree with or like, you maybe don't know the whole story and it isn't worth dwelling on. Sometimes I roll my eyes at this when I think baout our world in 2025 but maybe it's more important than ever. I go back and forth.
The other -
"To be hopeful you have to do hopeful things" - bascially just a reminder that if you're feeling sad about something or want to believe things can be better, do something to move in that direction. Hope is a practice.

You will never be punished for telling the truth to your parents.
Wherever you are, if you are in trouble, your parents will come pick you up whenever you want, no questions asked. We will tell your friends it's our fault.

When my sisters and I were little and made fun of someone who was different, my mom would say, “girls, wouldn’t it be a boring world if we all liked the same things?” I loved that.
My sister uses this with her kids:
Before you speak:
THINK
= Is it True?
= Is it Helpful?
I= Is it Inspiring?
N= Is it Necessary?
K= Is it Kind?
I know another family who has this up on the wall in their home:
- Basic Training -
1. If you open it, CLOSE IT!
2. If you turn it on, TURN IT OFF!
3. If you unlock it, LOCK IT!
4. If you break it, REPAIR IT!
5. If you can't fix it, CALL IN SOMEONE WHO CAN!
6. If you borrow it, RETURN IT!
7. If you use it, TAKE CARE OF IT!
8. If you make a mess, CLEAN IT UP!
9. If you move it, PUT IT BACK!
10. If it belongs to someone else, GET PERMISSION TO USE IT!
11. If you don't know how to operate it, LEAVE IT ALONE!
12. If it doesn't concern you, DON'T MESS WITH IT!
