He may be a good match for you but you are not for him. And that is a valid reason for him to end things.

Growing up, I knew many loving couples who disagreed completely about politics. The US Senate is famous for cross-the-aisle friendliness. I think people who have political litmus tests for partners and friends are un-American and make this country a much worse place.

This. He's not wrong for ending things though. He has a part of his life he finds interesting and engaging and he wants a partner who shares that with him. I'd say the same thing if he wanted to have these convos re: art, music, or sports.

Honestly, you dodged a bullet.

Many people are damaging their mental health with the amount of news they consume. Should we be aware and vote? Yes. But people are wasting their lives watching/reading the news, arguing online, and it gives them massive cortisol spikes and ruins their mental health.

I've seen people spiral to where they spend hours a day on news consumption and neglect their families and become overall unbearable to be around.

It sounds like he is giving you a fake reason for dumping you if you both vote alike.

Venting. Today my boyfriend of a year dumped me over politics. According to him we are not on the same page about politics (even though we vote the same). He likes to OD on political news daily and talk about it together. This is not my thing, but I indulge him.

Outside of this difference our relationship was good. In the past few years it just seems many people have become pollitically consumed and it sucks.
