the test is adaptive and progressively gets harder. the math specialist said the test is designed for kids to get half wrong as it gets harder. my first grader told me some of the questions he was answering and they were easily 3-4th grade questions. my 5th grader had 7th grade questions. so in those cases scrap paper may be needed. it isn’t a test just on grade level material

The test is adaptive, which means students may be given questions above grade level too.

They are in second grade, some kids struggle with math concepts. I was one of those. ES math was very hard for me. I took Algebra 1, not honors, in 9th grade. I taught statistics and game theory for 10 years as a Professor. Did I fail?

Kids learn at different speeds and in different ways. Be happy that your kid can do it in their head, many cannot. That is why they teach different approaches.

DS could do the math in his head but we were reminding him to show his work, even on easy problems, because we wanted him to develop that habit early. We knew it is a hard habit to break when kids get to more complex problems that you need to write down. It drove him crazy, but his math competition teacher insisted on it when he was in 4th grade, which reinforced what we had been saying.

Developing that habit is a good way of slowing down kids who can move through math quickly because the day will come when they cannot. It decreases frustration later on.

Yes, they get scrap paper, and then it is collected at the end of the test
