Some kids use different methods to use math. A lot of them are taught visual math. So even if they are given a simple problem like 12-7, some can do it in their head and some may draw 12 circles and cross out 7 of them.
You failed your child if they can’t do 12-7 in their head.
They are in second grade, some kids struggle with math concepts. I was one of those. ES math was very hard for me. I took Algebra 1, not honors, in 9th grade. I taught statistics and game theory for 10 years as a Professor. Did I fail?
Kids learn at different speeds and in different ways. Be happy that your kid can do it in their head, many cannot. That is why they teach different approaches.
