There is a significant portion of the population that is anti-science and anti-reality. They can’t be rescued. They MAGAs movement too advantage of them and weaponized their fear and paranoia.

Rural areas favor self-reliance because of their isolation, and that translates to disliking government interference.

This is an over-generalization but people who live in cities tend to be more comfortable with diversity of many kinds. We see our communities as being large —even international— and interconnected, and we vote accordingly. We also are more likely to know — either through travel or relationships— how other countries and communities work, so we know, for example, that there are things that America can do better, and, again, we vote accordingly.

Today’s Republicans seem more insular to me, and more self-centered. I’m also old enough to remember when this was not the case. Republicans and Democrats seemed to agree about what the problems were — but differed when it came to how solutions were developed. I remember genuine bipartisanship and shared goals, when Country meant more than Party. It’s easier to live those kinds of values with mutual respect when your values are about connecting and cooperating than it is if your goal is more focused on “owning the Libs” instead of creating better lives for larger, more inclusive communities.



the golden era of bi-partisanship was also marked with a rotation of republicans and democrats into the current tribes after the passage of the civil rights act. Because the parties were shfting, there was "bi-partisanship" but once Newt Gingrich started to weaponize the House, things started to go downhiill.

More rural areas are more homogenous and have less experience encountering people of other nationalities, cultures, religions, races, ethnicities. So they truly do see them as "other," they're more likely to have an instinctive fear response about those people living in other places (even if unconsciously), which drives them to become Republicans.

I mean, not exactly all. I grew up in such an area, and every Christian Sunday school kid sang (do they still? I haven't a clue) " Jesus loved the little children, red and yellow, black and white" (yes, awful words but didn't realize it then) but you know, easier if they are the kids in the missionary posters in the church fellowship hall.
