The side hug is like a weak handshake. It signals that you are awkward without you ever having to say a word. I say this as the child of a family of side huggers. It’s even weird still for me and I’m the daughter. Welcome to the Island of Misfit Toys!

No

Side hug or pat on the back.

No body on body $hit.

No. I don't let people touch me to make other people feel comfortable, what on earth.

I refuse to hug certain people. I make myself scarce or stand off to the side with body language that clearly says "don't touch me." If they still move in for a hug, I tell them I'm not hugging.

Does it make waves at times? Absolutely. Do I care? Nope. I'm not engaging in physical touch with anyone I don't want to. If someone has issues with my decisions about my bodily autonomy, that's their problem.

I'm also an adult and don't have to hug anyone I don't want to.

Yes, of course. The last thing I want is to create drama with people I don’t like.

Agree with above. Ex however encourages so kids get mixed messages- even though have had countless talks about how every article says to not force kids to hug or receive hugs

If it’s someone that I don’t care for, I don’t initiate a hug, but if they do, I hug them back.

If your in-laws are a hug-everyone family (meaning when family comes in door and when leave at an extended family gathering, everyone says hello and goodbye with hugs), what have you done if cannot stand particular relative? Whatever the reason- from extreme politics to how you observe them talking to their spouse or children-any other move than just not hug anyone if not willing to hug 1 and not wanting to call out why?
