DD17 is a senior at QO. She’s not into sports at all and has had some academic struggles. She has an IEP, but is 100% mainstreamed. She’s had a good experience at QO. She’s had zero problematic teachers and every year she has a couple different teachers who really connect with her or go the extra mile to help students. Whenever I speak to teachers, it’s evident they’ve gotten to know dd. There is a security guard who helped calm her down during a panic attack a couple years ago and ever since then, he checks in with her to see how she’s doing.

Almost 2,000 kids attend QO. Of course there are kids who prioritize academics.

Doesn’t that make it easier for their brightest students to get into competitive schools?

College acceptances are no where near some of the other MCPS HS's.

Great colleges do not come to the college fair QO kids go to.

However, if you are an involved parent it can be a great school.

They had a great math AP teacher not sure he's still there

I like QO as is. The students are great. People worried about their home values tanking by their boundary changing to QO should move. That Dufief poster should wait to see where the new boundary is so they can make sure they are not QO because that is not the sort of people I want around my kids.

QO just needs a principal who values academics like it did before the last principal.

Turning QO into lower FARMs school which is correlated with higher test-scoring students can make the school a less vibrant space. We chose QO because we do not like cookie cutter pressure cooker Ws. Any boundary changes should preserve QO’s character.

I was worried about my slightly nerdy, not so sporty kid there. Still a freshman, so only a couple of weeks in, but has come home excited about some assignments he worked on and some good conversations with his teachers. Looking at some of the comments from his teachers on assignments, it seems like they have made an effort to get to know him and already know about some of his interests and strengths. The one subject he generally doesn’t love, he has been putting extra effort into already and finds the teacher very approachable.

He has his sights set on good universities (not ivy, but ambitious). Time will tell, but so far so good.

Qo has a new principal this year. The previous principal had pluses (sports culture and inclusiveness) and minus (academics were less prteachers. It remains to be seen how the new principal will shape the school.
The school itself is safe, diverse and has some very exceptional teschers while the counseling department and APs are more of a mixed bag.

Tell me more about it if your kid is in this school

how is the culture - is it all about Sports or are there kids who actually want to study?
chances of going to a good college if you are not into Sports?
