Why don't split FCPS into multiple smaller ones like Herndon school district, great falls school district, Reston school district, Vienna school district, Falls Church School district, McLean school district.......basically, each town has a independent school district. This way can lift a lot burden from FCPS and the 10 school board members.

This has been discussed on this forum countless times, you can look it up…. But the main issue is money.

Right. This happens not in just one school. Several of my DC's friends from Cooper MS school had a PE teacher covering their English class at the beginning of the school year. Not sure whether they got an official English teacher later or not.

It’s not that easy to find language teachers! I’m sure they’re trying.

I think it depends on the context. DD had a similar situation in middle school - main teacher was on leave for good chunks of the year. But - all the kids went to the same high school and the French 2 teacher knew that these kids didn’t cover everything so she did more review. It worked out fine. But it would have been different if kids were all scattering.

I’m sorry - it absolutely sucks that your kid doesn’t have a real Spanish teacher yet. I would be hiring a private tutor or enrolling in an online Spanish course asap since your child won’t be learning much. You want them to have a good foundation so they can continue on with the levels. I wouldn’t wait for the school in this case.

These kinds of things happen more frequently than most school systems would like to admit. My very first teaching job, many years ago, I was hired during the third week of school. The previous teacher had decided to leave the week before school started. My students had a sub for three weeks who knew nothing about the subject. So basically I started fresh in week four. The kids were fine. We got through the curriculum and many of them are now successful adults. Kids are resilient. Don't stress too much.

You'll need to reach out to your administrator. One of the APs is probably in charge of foreign language and would have been the one to do the hiring.

It's really a case by case basis, so what someone else has experienced will have no bearing on your situation.

My 8th grader is taking Spanish 1B, so split the Spanish 1 curriculum into two years.

There has not been a teacher this year. It has been subs (and they do not speak Spanish). So the kids have been "reviewing" via Worksheets given by the Spanish 1A teacher. At Back to School night, it was shared that both a Long Term Sub (who speaks Spanish) and a permanent teacher had been hired, but due to the hiring process, they weren't sure when they would be in the classroom and the Long Term Sub might not even be necessary. My son shared with us this week they are still waiting on the "Spanish Certificate" to hire.

My question is, as we near the third week of school, what should be expect? How will they assess the kids, and at this point, will they be able to finish the curriculum? To date, there have not been any assessments or grades.

We've heard nothing from the School. I will reach out, but didn't know if anyone else had experienced this and had any advice.
