People should be aware of what being named to one of these talent id centers means at u14/15, and what it does not mean.

It means you play at a large club with ECNL/MLSN/GA
It means you are good relative to the other players on the club team.
It means you have a good attitude, work hard, and are one of the coach's favorites.
It means your club wants you to stay with the team but you are now more marketable to go elsewhere.

It does not mean you are better than the other players on the club team.
It does not mean you will get the same nomination next time.
It does not mean college coaches will be contacting you in 8th/9th grade.
It does not mean you are destined for D1 schools with scholarships.

Of the 40 or so local players attending these camps, only tiny handful will advance to the next round. The ones who can totally dominate at the camp. You'll know who they are right away.


I could have typed the same thing so thanks for warning the unsuspecting parents.


One caveat would be - of course they play with a big club - if you're trying to get into these things soley with private training it's not going to work. At some point you have to actually play for a club with connections.

Thanks for sharing that link...it's always been a bit of a mystery on what exactly was happening after you went to one of these Talent IDs...the document has some very good information, in particular the last page.

Yep. Very true at these ages. My DD's team had a player "get selected" several times who ended up coming back and telling the coach please don't recommend her again - she wasn't interested. She's still playing and doing well for her HS team, but dropped back from ECNL to RL. Not everyone wants the same things.

Once they get in front of the scouts though, players start to separate a bit and it becomes more obvious who belongs and who doesn't. Once you are there, it's then up to you to make sure that you stay on the radar and perform.

First recommendations are made after the end of the U13 season. USYNT puts the initial list together with varied player allocations per team/club.

The U14/15 girls camp is 15 days away. Do invitees know at this point? I am just trying to get a sense of timing and process on how this all happens, under no illusion my childs coach would recommend her or even have the ability to.
