Shift to Digital Curriculum
Out-of-School Support is undergoing a major transformation. We are shifting away from 1:1 instruction and adopting a digital curriculum model. As a result, there will be fewer opportunities to provide homebound or home-based instruction on a one-on-one basis. The OSS Manual, along with all public and internal sites, has been updated to reflect this new direction.
An infogram outlining the updates was released on 9/4/2025 and is available below.
Homebound and Home-based Instruction Updates
The following changes are being implemented for homebound and home-based instruction for SY 25-26.
Secondary students (grades 7-12) will access digital curriculum, Edmentum, for core academic courses
A medical justification must be provided by a doctor if a student is unable to access digital curriculum.
If a secondary student medically requires 1:1 virtual or in-person instruction, they will receive up to 2 hours of support in each core subject area.
Schools will support students in all elective courses and non-standard core academic courses
Examples include AP/IB courses, World Languages, Health and PE, Econ and Personal Finance, Literacy and Math electives, etc.
Elementary students (grades K-6) will continue to have access to up to 5 hours weekly of 1:1 virtual or in-person instruction depending on their medical needs.
Specific information on the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders within homebound and home-based instruction and all updated referral request forms are available in the updated OSS Manual on the [/site/c7330d0d-d5df-42b7-8c7a-e222a20e6bce/page/f5a31746-f3f4-4bbf-abd7-ca46ee643318]Out-of-School Support Atlas page.

FCPS has reduced all secondary students opportunities for 1:1 instruction to do the Edmentum program for self guided instruction. All AP, IB and non core curriculum subjects will be self study through the school. If you want your student to have homebound 1:1 you need to request it and ask to not be put on Edmentum. The Edmentum program is not going to coincide with the classroom curriculum so transitions back to class will take a toll on the student who has been out. The county basically replaced teachers with AI. Welcome to the future people.

That’s part of the problem. There’s almost no information to help a parent make informed choices.

Be aware that as of this year, there will no longer be 1 on 1 teaching for secondary homebound. All homebound core classes will be through Edmentum.

Where did you hear this? I don't see any change in the way homebound instruction is described online. Or any mention of Edmentum now being the go-to.

For these types of situations, the FCPS website includes very little information. For example, when we were going through placement for CSS, there was hardly any information on the website about the process or CSS program in general.

Wow I am considering asking for homebound as well for my HSer with mental health issues. The school told me there would be home visits though.

I am so lost and unsure of what to do, this or just do virtual Virginia or something else.

Does Fairfax County have an online school option for a student with an IEP who is struggling with a large high school but doesn't want the stigma attached to being in a self-contained class in high school?

I was told my child would get an in person teacher and Edmentum was just a stopgap.

Is edentum online?

Wooooow. I sure wish my team had been upfront with me when we were looking at this since Day 1 of school. That was NOT what I was told.

What were you told about edentum?

Has anyone received home bound services for a student (FCPS) due mental health diagnosis?
