Don’t come to MCPS for HS until after 2030. Taylor is mucking everything up with his concurrent boundary and program changes

That's not surprising.

What’s not surprising about it? Deal/JR are the 2 best non-magnet schools in DCPS.

Yes, and they are still about as good as a middle-of-the-road MCPS school.

I'm not sure this will look, but compare the proficiency rates between Jackson-Reed and three schools in Maryland. The first is Blair, probably the closest analogue to J-R in MCPS due to a mix of UMC and poor kids. The second is Albert Einstein, a perfectly lovely school that is often disparaged on this board. The third is B-CC, which OP is considering and which snobs consider the weak link among the Bethesda schools.

All three are substantially higher performing than J-R, without even introducing schools like Wootton and Whitman to the list.

Not sure if it's a "big" improvement but, nevertheless, an improvement

Yes. MCPS would be a big improvement.

I don’t have kids in DCPS but when I compare notes with friends there (we’re in bounds for BCC) it sounds like: 1) lots more options for differentiation and AP/IB coursework in MCPS, particularly for math
2) classes seem like they’re larger in MCPS than DCPS

I just watched my two stepsons go through MCPS DCC schools.

One school sucked all around. Writing instruction next to nonexistent, math/science teachers sucked, social studies seemed ok.

One school was great at STEM, ok with social studies, terrible with writing instruction.

Not sure if BCC is better.

From the stories I hear about DCPS, I DO think MCPS is more functional.

Like, my kids got into the right classes in high school. The right math class, the right science class, etc.

I have heard crazy things about kids at Wilson /JR getting put in math classes they already took, the wrong level foreign level, and it taking weeks to get it worked out.

I think stuff like that does not happen as much in MCPS.

But is the teaching better? Don't know.

If you only have one kid and you like where you live, I'd aim for private for high school. If you can't afford it, you might be able to get some aid.

I wouldn’t bother buying until the most recent boundary maps are revealed. Overall, BCC is going to be better than JR, but make sure your kid is actually going to be zoned for BCC. The better option would be Whitman.

Watch out for boundary changes

I'm pretty sure BCC will be better than DCPS, but also, which DCPS high school are we comparing BCC to?

MCPS has changed a lot over the years but I’d consider it better than DCPS. BCC is a pretty good HS. One of the better ones in MCPS.

Hello. We are in a part of DCPS where the high school prospects are bleak. In general we have not been impressed by the academic rigot or college preparation aspect of DCPS although socially it's been fine. Our son is not that academically motivated and tends to perform up or down to the level of the surrounding peer group/class (in other words B+ type student), it's not hard to do that in DCPS but you don't get a very good education.

We were thinking of moving to the Bethesda area so our son could attend BCC high school. I had always thought of MCPS as much better and more rigorous academically than DCPS, but some of the writing here is making me wonder if things have changed. Is it still true that MCPS is academically solid and has a good environment for learning?

Thanks
