His Composite Cogat Score last year(2'nd grade) was 148(V - 129; Quant - 148; Non Verbal - 142). NNAT was 144.

His Hope score basically sunk him last year in the AAP process. Should i reapply with these last years scores or request a one time retake of NGAT this year? Will having a recent NGAT score thatis comparable to the last year NNAT/COGAT be an advantage due to recency bias?

Thanks all.

I feel like you run the risk of lower scores if you retake, especially with a new version of the test that your child is unfamiliar with (in 2nd grade with the CogAT they did some sample questions and testing scenarios that helped the kids understand what to expect). I had my kid retake a few years ago because I wanted to reapply after not getting in in 2nd grade. I had her retake at George Mason so I could decide whether or not to share the scores with the school. Her scores were all much better so I submitted those with her packet (and much better work samples than what they school put in the first time around...) and she got in. Had her scores been lower, I wouldn't have included them. Since your child hasn't taken the NGAT before and has no idea what to expect should they take it, I'd have them do it through Mason or someone else who can administer it so you can decide whether or not to submit the results. If you cannot find a place to administer it, I'd just reapply with your current scores which are very good.

Was your child principal placed in any AAP classes this year? I think it also helped us that even though my daughter had no AAP designation of any kind, they sorted kids based on their actual performance in the classroom and she was put in advanced math. When we reapplied, it showed that she had been in AAP and doing well which I think also helped with the decision.

Also note there's no in-pool in any grade but 2nd. You have to parent refer (or a teacher refers, or even your child self-refers) for consideration in any other grade.

There will be an AAP meeting at you school that you can attend to ask questions. You can check the AAP website to learn about the process.

You can request a one time retake. Not sure of the deadline to make the request.

If you're new to FCPS, and do not have a similar assessment on file, third graders will take the NGAT in the fall. However, since you note that your third grader took COGAT last year this doesn't apply. if you either didn't apply or didn't get on, you will need to apply in December using the cogat from last year. If you wanted a different score, you would have to seek out your own additional testing. I think you can also request one retest through FCPS? But that would still be parents driven, not just given in the fall.

What was the score last year?

So what is the process for the current 3rd graders in regular class to be selected for full time AAP when they go to tbe fourth grade next year? If they don’t take any exams like NGAT, what will be the criteria ?

Thanks

There’s no testing for AAP after 2nd. You can request a one-time retake of either COGAT/NNAT, or now NGAT. If you want your child considered for AAP next year, You have to submit a parent referral by the December deadline.

My DS is currently in 3'rd grade (Regular class not AAP). When will 3'rd graders take the NNAT/COGAT this year? will it be this Fall (when he was in 2'nd grade he took this during Fall) or a different timeline?

Also , will it be NNAT/COGAT or will it be NGAT this year?

thanks
