It surprises me because my employer would probably put me at the top of chopping block if I did this assuming I want out.

Or if they have been RIFd and know they have 3 months to look for a job. They will not show as unemployed until the 3 months are over and they are no longer on the payroll.

That might be preferable to quitting, since they would get unemployment while they look for a new job.

I think my profile says that. My work is commission based so technically I’m always looking for work, but I’ve been with my company for a long time. I’m not actively looking for a new job, near retirement, and my company can’t afford for me to leave, they are looking for more of me and can’t find them. No one has ever asked me about it. We don’t have a big LinkedIn culture.

It’s more likely that they are currently employed while looking for a new job.

I'm interviewing with a company for a job and while researching on LinkedIn, noticed several people claiming the company was their current employer but also with their photo indicating that they are open to work. I didn't see any posts from them indicating that they had been laid off, talking about their job search, etc. What is more likely: that they are no longer employed by the company and failed to update their current employer, or that they are looking for work while employed? Would anyone actually do the latter?
