I’m sorry this happened OP
I sounds like your DD doesn’t feel safe where you live.

Get a consultant . Let your DD be part of the process.

Good luck to you all.

Landmark outside of Boston. They have boarding and it’s a beautiful setting. I know two families there with dyslexia and one has ADHD. Both are very happy and I think it has been a Transformative experience.

OP here. Thank you for this. I've looked a bit into Landmark and it does look truly amazing. I'm a little bit nervous that the psych stuff may disqualify her. If you know anything I'd be grateful to hear it.

Poster here who knows people at Landmark. I think it is at least worth a conversation with them. There are definitely kids there who had lower case T trauma from bullying, teachers dismissing them etc., deep self esteem issues etc. I have no sense of what your daughter needs but lots of these kids come in “not in a good place” to varying degrees.

What they do with the kids is nothing short of remarkable: huge academic gains, confidence, independence etc.

The classes are extremely small—5/7 kids often so kids are well known and supported.

Worth a look.

Good luck OP!

Op just here to say I’m touched by your willingness to truly listen to your daughter and make a big change for all of you to hopefully give her what she needs. Wishing all of you the best.

I knew someone with an LD and trauma profile who said the Gow School was life changing for her.

I’m 17:02, and I think the idea of a consultant is a good one. This person came highly recommended to me by someone whose kid had worked with her but we never got that far. She directs the learning center at one of the boarding schools I mentioned and is also a consultant who helps families find right-fit schools. Linked in suggests mental health experience too? Might be a decent place to start — looks like you can do a single session if you want low commitment to start. No idea about cost, but given the cost of these schools, it seems like it could be well worth it.

Good luck. If you find a place that works well, would love an update. Rooting for your DD.

Riverview has a wonderful reputation, but it's target population is kids who are on the border between ID and LD. It's probably not a good fit for OP's kid.

I know a kid who had LD and some psych issues who had a good experience there. I know a similar kid who had a good experience at Eagle Hill, also in MA.

I agree, though, that an educational consultant who specializes in this is a good idea.

OP, given the amount of money you are likely to spend, it would make sense for you to hire an educational consultant to place your daughter at the best school for her issues. I'm sure there are several places that would be great for her, but having someone on your team who is very familiar with this landscape could help you place her in the best fit school.

I'm so sorry about what happened to your daughter, OP. I wish her, and your whole family, healing and peace.

Proctor Academy has a fantastic reputation for LD kids, though I don't know what their capacity is for dealing with PTSD. I know several great kids who went there, and I looked into it for my own kid at one point. There's also a school called Chapel Hill Chauncy Hall, though I don't know anyone know attended there.

Other schools that aren't LD specific but that either offer learning support programs or seemed to work well for some I knew kids with higher learning needs and that have reputations for being uniquely nice and more generally supportive than some of the pressure-cooker boarding schools are the Brooks School, Dublin School, Stoneleigh-Burnham School, and the George School in PA (NOT St. George's in RI! That's a whole other vibe). Again, I don't know about mental health supports given your DD's PTSD. But if these aren't fits, they seem like the kind of places that might be willing to talk to you and help steer you toward other options.

Best of luck to you all in your search for a better situation.

Our high school daughter is not doing well. She is struggling with PTSD from sexual assault and long story short, we are finally listening to her when she says that she needs to get out of our city/state and away in order to be able to fully heal.

She has an IEP for reading, math, executive functioning--basically dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD stuff. But she is smart and motivated. She believes she can heal, and wants to go to college. I know that there are kids with LD who conquer all of this. And I am certain that her not attending school due to trauma has exaggerated her challenges.

I am looking for a high school where they really, REALLY see kids with learning disabilities as individuals and can help them learn and go on to college. I would prefer the west coast but I'm open. It could be boarding or it could be a situation where our family is bi-state for a while. Socially she is quite adept and would prefer to be with other kids who are her social peers.

Therapeutic interventions in school would be nice but not essential, because wherever she is we will find the best trauma therapist for her.
I'm literally open to anything, no matter how much of a stretch it may seem. We'll figure out the money. Thank you.
