It's never been uncommon most people marry within their tax bracket always have. . There are exceptions but the Cinderella is fairytale for a reason.

They say assortative mating has caused the explosion in autism (nerds marrying each other.)
Both my sister and I married beneath us financially and came to regret it. My mom married waaaay up but didn't bother to teach us to do the same.
My cousin, who is not book smart at all but knows how to play the game, married a schlubby immigrant who has an estate with servants in his home country.

It’s called assortive mating. People marry people like them, and it’s been ratcheting up in America. So yes, an example like yours has become quite uncommon.

I know a guy who makes about 400k who just proposed to his fiance who works an hourly retail job (but has a college degree). It just occurred to me that all the other couples I know make fairly even salaries with the man usually earning slightly more. I’m wondering why he didn’t go for a woman with a 6 figure job.
