Yes, absolutely. They know they don't have an infinite amount of money available to them for school and if they choose to chase merit for undergrad and put it all towards a graduate degree, or seeding a Roth IRA, or simply want a program that one of those schools offers, I would feel like that is an extraordinarily mature decision on their part. One of them wants to go to law school and we've talked about how incredible and freeing it would be to walk out of that with no student loans. Heck, even if they just want to get out of the mid Atlantic and get to know a very different part of the country, that's fine too.

Of the schools listed, UNM is in the largest city of roughly 1 million people. For DMV folks who couldn't stand living in small/remote college towns, UNM is probably the best. Albuquerque is also the easiest to get to.

Go to a school where there are significant numbers of kids on full merit (national merit finalists, etc). These schools cater to these kids and there is a smart, motivated cohort.

DC just did a summer research internship at Univ of New Mexico and the air force base there. I would recommend UNM for engineering/STEM. Sandia national lab is also there. Lots of opportunities.

Depends on major. Some of these schools are well-respected in somewhat niche fields.

I probably already know the answer to this but how does DCUM feel about mid ranked state universities offering either in state tuition or almost full merit to out of state kids with high GPAs. Would you consider if for your kid?
