At least as of 2020, “MSDE has identified exams that would allow students to earn a substitute credit in English 12 in order to accelerate the student’s graduation from high school.
In accordance with COMAR 13A.03.02.04.I.(2), “(2) A student who would be eligible to graduate but for obtaining credit in English 12 may obtain that credit by taking a State-approved examination and achieving a passing score as defined by the Maryland State Department of Education.”

At the time, that was spelled out as:
The minimum scores for the 3 assessments required for this option are:
• 650 on the English portion of the SAT;
600 on the sat2 literature test
• 5 on each of the three (3) dimensions of the SAT Essay (reading, analysis, and writing).

Clearly out of date now though as not all these testing options exist anymore.

My child graduated a year early just this past year. He took AP English at school and completed English 11 at the same time through OPTG (online, but with 2 required evening Zoom classes for an hour each time). He found it very doable. The counselor registers the kids for OPTG and it is a free option.

Or English 11 in the summer and English 12 during the school year.

I don’t know about taking AP lang and AP lit at the same time, but at my school, kids who want to graduate early are able to take English 11 and English 12 at the same time.

For anyone who has recently pursued graduating in three years from MCPS, what did you do for the fourth year of English requirement?
What is the test out option? I see old documents but one mentions SAT essay and subject test so it’s clearly out of date. Another references scoring a 3 on AP Lang, but you wouldn’t get that score until after the desired time of graduation and would be too late for summer school. Is there a verbal SAT score that has worked for anyone? Or the 10th grade English end of year exam?
For those who didn’t test out, how’d you get your fourth year? Do they waive pre reqs for English 12 or AP Lit so you can take concurrently with English 11 or AP Lang? Count an English elective course?

Thanks!
