I never did anything as a kid so I ended up an art major and now work in a creative, fun field. I sometimes can't believe they pay me to do this.

Why do you think it's depressing? It's not, I didnt do many activities growing up, couldn't play sports and had only one or two other activities that I had fun with. I'm not at all worse for the ware and had a great childhood.

My siblings and I didn't do activities as kids because our parents couldn't take us during work hours. I think we all went through a period of trying many things but none really stuck. I do have hobbies but they're similar to what I did as a teen without transportation. I have poor hand/eye coordination so that's a big part of it, tennis and golf even with lessons didn't work out.

Yeah, I used to quit everything I tried. It was kind of a family joke. Wasn’t an athlete or a reader, spent most of my time watching TV. Took up running in college and I still run 5 days a week in my late 40s. And I read constantly. People evolve.

I didn't do any activities as a kid because my parents found it inconvenient to take me. Sometimes my mom would sign me up for an activity, get very excited, buy me all of the gear, and then a class or two into the session she would realize it was a drag taking me. She usually solved that by telling me I wasn't very good at the activity and it was hard for her to get me there, so how about we quit? I always quit. I don't do any activities now as an adult and have no hobbies. I work and take care of my kids. I do have friends, though.

Looks like you take everything a little too far.
I did a few activities before and I do some now, but I do take breaks from them.

Nope, no activities as a kid, no activities as an adult.

My parents could not pay for any activity. I used to start classes as trial but then I had to drop it after the free trial period was over. They did the best that they could.

What I learned, I did on my own. Even now, in my 60s, I learn from youtube etc. The thing is that when we were growing up, EC activities were not a thing.

And now, ECs are really expensive. You have to pay for all kinds of travelling, competitions, uniforms, fees etc, etc.

Yep. I wanted to do things as a kid, but my parents wouldn’t let me. It has affected me because I feel like I missed out on many things and didn’t learn important life lessons. Ironically, my kids don’t want to do many activities even though I encourage them to try things. I keep myself busy with lots of fun hobbies now.

I did tons of activities as a kid, and do a bunch as an adult. Generally the ones I do as an adult are different than what I did as a kid - voice lessons and yoga and sailing lessons.

Oh, and I wasn't pressured as a kid, except for piano and Hebrew school - I couldn't do enough after-school activities as a child.

I didn’t do any activities as a kid (I did in middle and high school when I could initiate things myself through school).

In terms of my own kids, I had them both play instruments bc I wished I had learned to when I was young. I also started them each on a rec sports team young, something I never did as a kid.

Personally, I am not really involved in activities as an adult (work doesn’t count…). I would love to find my thing though… guess it’s never too late.

Pp here. I did do a lot of things as an adult, but I did spend lots of time as an adult learning a lot of things other people take for granted. I learned to drive as an adult, read personal finance books, etc.

My mom had a lot of anxiety issues so I never really got to do a lot of those things or learn a lot of skills other people assume everyone learns.

I did zero activities as a kid, mostly because I didn’t want to and would throw a fit if my parents tried to make me. My siblings and I spent our afternoons and weekends rotting in front of screens.

Interestingly, as adults, we’re all into various activities. My siblings became very health-conscious in their 20s and got into sports and fitness, one is a competitive body builder. The other sibling also became an artist as an adult.

I ended up doing an insane number of activities as an adult - I’ve done dance, martial arts, gymnastics, played instruments, along with general fitness, writing, and art.

I always wondered if it’s because I wasn’t pressured as a kid, so I never burnt out on it, and now I can enjoy them. There’s also no pressure to perform at elite levels - obviously I will never be a professional dancer at age 40, so I can go to class a few times a week just for fun.

Anyone else have a similar story?
