My public library says no children allowed can be without a supervising adult under the age of 15 which I think is crazy. A 9th grader can’t go to the library? I have neighbors who have their 4th graders bike through traffic to the 7 11 store alone which is way more full of weirdos (plus the danger of traffic) than our library.

Umm, no you can’t abandon your kid in the library for hours. Just leave them home. It’s much safer. Or just skip the event. It’s back to school night. Nothing you can’t get the information from afterwards. Not that there’s anything earth shattering anyway.

It’s 30 minutes each way. Can I leave a 9 year old home alone for 2+ hours?

In Maryland yes.

Why not? If the child will just read or watch TV, there should be no problem.

Virginia has no law, but these are the guidelines: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/familyservices/children-youth/child-supervision-guidelines

If you actually want to know, give your child’s age and the state where this would be occurring. But it’s a much better idea to bring your kid or leave them at home.

No children allowed at the event. Spouse will be out of town for work.

The library is too open to the public for me to be comfortable with this.

Look at the supervision guidelines for your county, but probably not.

Find a babysitter.

I'm pretty free range, and I wouldn't. Who would contact you in an emergency and how?

Can a third grader be left in the children’s section of the public library to read while parent attends school back to school night 3 blocks away for a hour or so? Safe suburb, never seen any homeless people at the library or in town. Child is used to occupying self. Will librarians or other parents report this to police or something?
