Many of the school supplies actually get handed into the teacher and shared communally anyway. And often they include things that a particular teacher doesn't even want. Yes, email the teacher and ask which supplies are most important if you'd actually like to purchase some yourself for your child, and/or ask the teacher or PTA if you'd like help accessing free supplies.
