Underweight is associated with lower survival rates for cancer--runners have very little fat and also tend to be low in terms of muscle bulk. The body needs stores of both fat and muscle to fight off cancer and to tolerate cancer treatments.

This is probably part of it.

Long distance running is also extreme and stresses the body.

Which is why you’re on a glp-1

I've never thought long distance running was a healthy work out. Especially compared to walking, pilates, yoga, and barre.

That’s my bet too.

I don’t think they’re recommending that anyone quit running, but you should definitely consider extra screening. Distance runners in the study were found to have significantly more polyps overall. The doctor pursued this line of research after seeing 3 patients who were long-distance runners and developed colon cancer before age 40. All 3 are now deceased.

I’ve never noticed that in any distance runners I know — and I know a couple who were very competitive marathon runners who are now in their late 60s with no cancer. But it’s interesting because marathon runner tends to have different poop patterns than non runners. I would have thought more frequent pooping would be associated with lower risk of colon cancer but maybe there’s a point at which it goes the other way?

I mean, long distance runners don’t look healthy.

I’m not surprised there’s some sort of risk from stressing your body like that.

FYI, an article published in yesterday’s NYT references a super-interesting study by a Fairfax-based oncologist on distance running and colon cancer. More research is needed, but it appears that marathon runners may be at significantly higher risk.

I tried to post the link but for some reason I’m getting a “forbidden” error. Title is “Are Marathons and Extreme Running Linked to Colon Cancer?” Also looks to be available from other free outlets.
