We will find out 4 years from now if we were in recession today. This administration will NEVER admit to a recession. And in fairness it's just not them, politicians are notorious for downplaying recessions. And for good reasons, many lose their jobs.

I have never had this many people reached out to me either via LinkedIn or word of mouths for help finding a job.

We live in very different worlds apparently. What you’re describing is completely foreign to me.

No shit Rambo! You are doing well. Good for you.

I've had 3 unsolicited job offers within the last 8 months, but here's the problem: All offers are for the same job. Yes, maybe at different companies, but all the offers are essentially lateral into a different org for equivalent pay and benefits.

That's the crux of the problem. Sure I can get a different job, but I'll be falling behind at the same rate as I am at my current job. Professional salaries have been obliterated by inflation over the last 5 years.

Well, most of us can't afford to buy as much and are cutting back because of the price increases.

My dad is a mason. I wanted to go into masonry and my dad said absolutely no way. One time some his friends were home and we were taking about it and they were all like kid to go college get yourself a nice job in an office and don't kill yourself doing what we are doing. A lot of people who are doing manual labor don't always want their kids to do the same. And it's not for everyone. When people say trade they often mean manual labour. You think your son who spent all his time playing video games expecting to go to college barely did any manual work at home is suddenly going to be interested and find success doing manual labor?

This. My son is a junior so we have been taking about college, career, job, life etc. I suggested to him if he would consider going to trade school for welding or electricity or plumbing. He looked at me with a blank stare as if it was beneath him. I don't know folks..

Have you ever tried to do this? Do you have any experience doing this? Easy to say but if one knows nothing about a trade or has no experience, how do you go about it?

Yes. It's just the beginning so it's not as obvious yet. I think it will happen slowly, then all at once. This is how I remember 2008 and the early 90s. Even then, some of the worst came two or three years into it.

Not so: construction is falling. Turns out that when the market for office jobs is down, nobody has money to remodel their bathroom let alone buy a new house or office building.

Exactly.

I don't know if the disconnect is unique or it's just a lag in reporting and it's more obvious to me now that I'm in a position to make hiring decisions. And everyone that I know who is in a position to make hiring decisions is reporting the same thing - many more applicants for open posiitons, higher quality applicants for open positions, people settling for less money, and many more people reaching out for job connections when nothing is posted.

I can't say for sure that the numbers are being cooked (but of course it's not a good sign that that feels like a real possibility), this could be just a regular lag in reporting. But there are many people looking and not many jobs available.

Has there ever been this much disconnect between job figures/unemployment and the true state of the economy?

I have never had this many people reached out to me either via LinkedIn or word of mouths for help finding a job.
