We drive our high schooler usually. His high school is not near the metro, and there have been shootings at the metro station it's closest to after school between high school, so I'm not risking it. Luckily, it's a 15 minute drive for us.

School started yesterday for my brown middle schooler. I'm still comfortable with him using metro for the ride.

Yesterday, he said some kind of law enforcement walked through the train car, that he saw someone asleep in the station. Other than that, a normal commute.

Our 15 year old has to go from NE to NW. We may drive him instead of him taking the metro.

Are you altering how your kids in DC are getting to school due to the takeover?

We’re debating whether metro, walking, or driving makes the most sense for our high schooler. With the increased presence of guards and law enforcement, we’re a little uneasy about possible stops or intimidation, especially for our black/brown kids. Our family has been part of this city for generations and what’s happening is unsettling.

Are you making any changes to how your kids get to and from school, or keeping things the same? Have your schools or the city made any recommendations? It would be helpful to hear how other families are thinking about this.
