A lot of posters saying what they did in high school (20+ years ago?) must not understand what it's like today.

Employers want FULL availability, even if they only schedule you a few hours a week.
Also, they don't want to mess with age restrictions--so not only the hours, but working with certain machinery, not being able to serve alcohol (like with the catering) etc.
Most teens I know with jobs were able to get them because they personally know the manager/owner.

I bagged groceries only on weekends at a supermarket. But not as glamorous as detailing cars…

Does this exist? He is very motivated.

Start his own car detail biz. Put out some advertising and word of mouth.

Catering companies are always looking for staff for weddings and other events, the bulk of which would be on weekends!

Car dealerships are open all weekend and need staff to prep cars for the weekend buyers.

Car rental companies need weekend staff.

Valvoline seems to hire younger people. His best bet may be popping by places he’s interested in and having a conversation. That’s how my son got one of his jobs when he was in high school (at a motorcycle dealer). They didn’t even actually have an opening, they made a job for him.

A very specialized car detailer is very sought after and very expensive. But it can probably also be pretty gross I'd imagine.
What about a mechanic's apprentice? Or Jiffy Lube? He could be the QC person that makes sure all the final things are done. I can't even recall all the stories I've heard about simple but expensive eff ups where somebody forgot to cap something.

I don't know about that, but if you're interested in other ideas, there's flag football refereeing. They train you on the spot, and the games are on weekends at various locations—you can sign up for your location preference. https://www.flagstarfootball.com/workwithus (scroll towards the bottom). If you're interested, reach out soon. There pre-season get-together for training and handing out shirts, whistles, flags, etc, is this weekend (not paid), and the season starts next weekend.

It does. My son did this while he was in HS. But the kind of shops that would hire were specialty and weren’t all open weekends so it was after school in some instances.

Car washes might be easier.

He can only work weekends (but can work all day) and wants something to do with cars - washing, detailing, basic maintenance, lot boy, etc.
