The IKEA bags from Amazon come in a 6 pack, can be checked in on airlines, and make packing the car easier. We got a six pack, and DD didnt fill them all. However we did need to rent a Uhaul to move her into an apartment junior year (to bring a dresser, bed, and all the other stuff she had accumulated).

Yikes. My daughter is going with 2 bags although I expect we will buy some items when we are there.

I can see the bags from where I'm sitting:

4 Ikea bag things. 1 roller bag. 2 pillows. 1 guitar case.

For our boys, basic bedding/clothes, very minimal. About to move my daughter in and she has so much! 2 huge duffles of clothes. 2 huge bags of bedding. Many bags of organizing items, makeup, accessories, mirror, plastic drawer unit, coffee maker, etc. We are driving and the car is totally full.

My son has 4 Ikea bags, and ottoman filled with stuff, and one box. Boys are very different than girls

Entirely depends where you end up. But in general, no.

Neither my son or daughter took much past the essentials. Know that they will accumulate a lot during the year. It all has to be moved out, so the less the better. We had about 3 Ikea bags of clothes and supplies, one fridge, one bag of bedding. Everything fit in the back of our Toyota RAV.

DS brought one large hiking backpack (clothes, one suitcase (bedding), and his school bag (laptop, chargers, prescriptions). Since he's very allergic and his room had carpet, he brought a HEPA vacuum and an air filter, so two cardboard boxes. I think there was a laundry bag full of miscellaneous items.

8-10 IKEA-like bags from Amazon. Live close to college and we make two trips, sometimes on the same day, sometimes in a couple of weeks. Her friends (OOS and international) got storage units after first year.

It depends if you are on a plane or not.

I'm not sure there is a typical. Most girls will bring about triple the boys, but regardless, when you are bringing bedding/towels/toiletries/clothes etc., there's a lot to bring!
