My oldest took one freshman year and rarely used it. I think he left it at home his sophomore year. He lived off campus junior and senior years and used the bike to get back and forth to campus. He had a car but parking on campus was tough so it was easier to ride his bike.

My youngest one went to an urban school with a small campus and didn't need the bike at all. He also moved off campus his junior year and we didn't have a car for him the first semester. So he used the bike to get back and forth to campus. Ironically, the urban school had more parking on campus than the college that was in a small town so once he got his car, he just drove back and forth to campus.

I spent all of college on my bike but that was a different era.

Nope. Neither kid.

Thieves are scum. Absolutely zero excuse.

If he's taking a bike, make sure it's a cheap one.

No - Pitt has bikes all over the city the kids can use inexpensively and easily, and the bus system is excellent and free for students - our kid has taken the bus to internships

No. He's in a city and his university issues a public transport pass to everyone.

Didn’t buy bike. DS finds a skateboard more useful (California school).

Yes. But I got a cheap one on Amazon due to theft being common. I had it assembled at local bike shop and had the guy teach my son how to lock it up properly. Attached back fender to deflect mud and light to handlebars. You’re supposed to cover the bike with stickers to make it more recognizable, less likely to be stolen.

Make sure they know to always wear a helmet. I got a bike related concussion when I was in college and it was awful.

Mine will. He's allowed to take a car, by school rules, but that's not in our budget.

Yes. My kid has a bike and used it frequently throughout freshman year. Get a good lock (she actually has two -- one to lock the bike to the bike rack and one to lock the seat to the bike).

Did they take a bike to campus if they are not allowed to have a car freshman year?

I spent all of college on my bike but that was a different era.
