It's really important to be close to her school, sports, and family, so I would move.

I would stay where you are and try to sell in the Spring. Start looking at houses now, but I would be careful to stay within budget.

I did. My MIL had a stroke and we had to move her in with us, and we didn’t have a way to remodel to accommodate. I managed to break even.

Life is short. IF you can afford the loss, I’d do it.

Similar reasons? We feel like we’ve suddenly outgrown a house that suited a version of ourselves that doesn’t exist anymore. DD and I have talked about it but DH is having trouble admitting it even though I know he’s feeling similarly.

Moving expenses for a local move plus probably $100-200k.

See my other comment- if she hates the new private the MS in the local district starts in 6th and she has cousins and friends from sports there. So she has a backup school if private is a bust.

Yeah I did this in the mid 2000s but I would not do it now unless I was moving overseas.

I'm also considering it but the market is terrible right now.

We closed on a house in the neighborhood we already lived in down the street from DD’s private school in Nov 2024. We moved in after a lot of repairs in March 2025. In the months in between those two dates, DD went through a really difficult time at school with bullying and we decided to accept an offer from a private school that we had applied to “just in case” earlier that year. There is a ton of overlap between the families at our old school and our current neighborhood so our neighborhood has lost some of the appeal that it used to have for us.

Her new school is across town but very close to family and her sports. We’d long considered moving to that neighborhood but felt tied to our existing neighborhood and private school community.

Now we’re sitting here in what was supposed to be our dream house and it feels like a pair of jeans that don’t fit.

Is it crazy to decide to move? We wouldn’t be able to list until spring 2026 and we did enough improvements that I’m 100% sure we’ll lose money and not need to worry about capital gains.

I feel like an idiot and wish I could have predicted what went down at school.
