Subject: Best place to buy a Mac?
The absolute cheapest new MacBook Air is sold by Walmart. It has an M1 chip which is just good enough but 4 years old. So it would be better to pay a bit more. I suggest you go with a 13” MacBook Air of some type if you are not sure.

No best place. Figure out which one you want, run price comparisons, buy the best deal (from a reputable seller, but there are many).
No need to buy direct from apple, though sometimes it makes sense. If you have any old apple products you are ready to part with, you can sometimes get a deal off a trade in.
I do recommend getting AppleCare, especially for a student.

I just got our dd one from Best Buy for $799. It was $200 less than the Apple Store, which allowed me to get her the wireless mouse.

Buying directly from Apple is usually a bad deal, unless you want a custom configuration (extra RAM, extra storage, etc.), in which case you pretty much have to buy from them, since most dealers just stock the default configurations. Apple does have an education discount (not sure if this applies to high school students), but you can usually do better than this by buying elsewhere.
Look at Amazon, B&H Photo (which does stock some custom configurations), Newegg, Micro Center, etc.
