I once helped coached a golf team in MCPS. I would say that if your student knows how to play golf, try out for the team and show the coaches what they can do, regardless of how strong the program is. Likely, your student will play 9 holes a couple of times at a nearby course, and if cuts are necessary, the coaches will use those rounds to make determination of who is on the team. Having a freshman who knows how to play a proper round of golf under the rules and can shoot a reasonable score is often worth keeping on the team as a potential replacement for a graduating senior.Sherwood usually has capable players, but not necessarily a deep bench, so definitely worth the time to try out.

As with many sports, the answer depends on the school.

You can probably guess which MCPS schools have the more competitive golf teams - those in the more affluent areas. Those schools have tryouts and not every student who tries out makes the team.

To the original poster's question though - Sherwood typically has a relatively competitive team, but not quite as competitive as the top schools in the county (Churchill, Whitman, Wootton, B-CC and Poolesville are typically very strong). Sherwood usually has very good golfers, but the team isn't quite as deep in talent as the other top programs. So it depends year to year how competitive it would be to make Sherwood's team.

Other schools (the least affluent, that have the least amount of exposure to golf growing up) are begging for more students to play golf to fill out the team.

Golf can be quite competitive depending how many kids show up, as only a very small number are on the team.

Perhaps the question to ask is: what public high school has the best golf coach? Coaches are likely high school teachers who enjoy the sport; some might actually be good golfers and your student will gain valuable coaching.

Best golf teams are going to be at the private schools, e.g. Georgetown Prep, Gonzaga.
