Have you talked to a guidance counselor? They were a big help in helping us figure out curricular alignment etc when I moved my kid back from overseas, but it was high school not middle school.

If I have to guess, I would think it would be hard to assign an MCPS “honors” weighting to a school about which MCPS has no knowledge.

In middle school anyway, my kid’s middle school record from the years before he was at McPS is entirely absent from his MCPS record (it doesn’t appear as part of his GPA.)

Could a student do an AP class or two online and take the exam overseas, maybe at an international school? I feel like there is a provider from Utah? Anyone know?

If it was my kid I would want them to have the experience of seeing a new country and being immersed in a new culture for the semester/year.

I imagine if your child is a capable and competitive student, any shortcomings or gaps in their application can easily be explained with a personal statement or statements from counselors.

Anyone from MCPS recently done an exchange semester or year abroad? Our HS is AP, not IB. How did things work out for credits and gpa and highly selective college admissions? My kid is interested but it seems so rigid with credits and I have some GPA concerns. I feel like it’s risky getting a lowered gpa (seemingly inevitable in a new language), especially for UMD and other large flagships. And lowered AP count for all schools. Any experience? I’m thinking a gap year post graduation would be preferred but I want to see if people are navigating this successfully, especially as language skill acquisition would be better younger. I think it would either need to be sophomore spring or all of junior year. Preferably the former (to me) to not miss all the AP classes and credits.
What classes did your child receive or not receive credit for? It seems like US History and English (unless you take abroad as a second language?) are out. Math might have some coverage gaps. Did they get honors credit for classes taken abroad?
