I have everyone beat. My son's hobby is luxury real estate flipping.

I have a friend whose sons are in f2 or f3, and I’m going to guess that they have spent at least $3+ million on cars, tires, travel, instruction, mechanic service hours.

No, I don't need to feel better about. We have one kid and it took years of trying and IVF to conceive him. If he wants to do an expensive travel sport, so be it.

Let me tell you about sailing...I always say, at least I don't have to keep the boat alive!

How old is she, and for how many years had she been playing prior to getting such an expensive instrument? Do you feel it has made her more competitive in terms of orchestra placement/seating, summer music programs, etc?

I believe a trained competition horse is worth a lot of money, so if you are able to be the one to train that horse then it can pay off.

I gather if you purchase an already trained horse then you have already paid for the appreciation.

If you are a great trainer and you don’t mind dumping/euthanizing the ones that don’t work out, you might bat .250 developing young horses for profit. But most people who make money buying and selling horses do it by bringing them to a market where they will be worth more (eg importing them from Europe) or finding affluent clients and acting as their agent for a commission. Horses appreciating is an occasional perk for people who are in it for other reasons, not a business plan.

This is a critical delusion for many of us.

Won’t it appreciate if cared for properly?

Both are ridiculously expensive. My DD rides and my DS plays travel baseball. They both love the experiences, but I secretly can't wait until they are both done with these hobbies...

If you do, I can tell you how much we spend on horses.
