Read up. Before the first bomb was dropped, the US pushed Japan to surrender, under threat of a devastating attack, using a new kind of bomb, and they said "Yeah whatever."
Then Hiroshima experienced a devastating attack... and, again, they were pushed to surrender, under threat of a second devastating attack of a second unnamed city. "Nope, we're good," they said.
So the US bombed Nagasaki and then they said "OK, ok, wait, we surrender."
In the months before the bombs were dropped Truman asked for realistic estimates of what it would take for the US to defeat Japan conventionally and he was given "about 5 years and at least 250,000 dead US troops" at which point he said "Hmm, ok, get the atomic bomb things ready, we're not fighting them for another 5 years."
