They aren't native and suffer a lot from local weather, plus blight. Our native inkberry holly (Ilex glabra Shamrock, gembox, strongbox) looks nearly identical to boxwood and can be pruned the same way. It comes in a variety of sizes. If you wanted round balls of boxwood, you might also like the round ball thujas like tater tot, anna's magic ball, Mr. bowling ball.
