I am 47 and this really proved to me that it's easier to find a job if you are currently employed.

What is this the case? One of the reasons I did this soft search is to see what kind of challenges I will be facing at my age.

Are you male? I'm surprised you received so many interviews at 47.

I love how the threshold for ageism continually drops on this board.

"Late 30s? Better hope you like the job you're in - it's the last one you'll ever have!"

As a newly turned 40 year old fed, I find it terrifying. I definitely can't afford to "retire" at this age. So I hope DCUM is exaggerating.

Depends on the industry. The longer I have been off, the more ex employers insist that it's time to get out of the house.
If I were to go to a new company, I'd be hired on the spot based on my looks, the experience, the license, and staying with same companies for years.
If they knew that I don't need to work for money, I'd definitely get hired. They want people who work, because they like the industry.
Nobody wants to deal with 2-week notice, background check, calling references.

This is NOT true in my situation. I accepted an early buyout in April 2024, and received 12 months of severance pay + bonus. I took six months off to travel, and after that, I received three different job offers for the same salary/bonus. It depends on your skills and what you bring to the table. I work in AI space.

OP, why did you turn down the offer? I've been reluctant to interview aggressively because I'm concerned I will feel pressure to accept something I'm not thrilled about.

Why it's easier to find a job when you are already employed:

It shows that you have a strong work ethic, and can work through office politics and other shitty work issues and still keep your eye on the ball. I don't want a delicate flower who quits when the going gets tough.

HR people are stupid. If you are unemployed, they think you are unemployable. They are incapable of making their own assessments, so they rely on the judgement of your current employer, regardless of the actual value of that judgement.

Same with relationships. People think you are worth more if you are not single and taken, so they try to date you and take you away from your current partner.

Human nature and part of the twisted human psyche.

Women are more likely to do that I hate to say. Men are scared of other men because we know the impredictabiliy of a fellow man. Most men will not try to date a woman who is in relationship, that's playing with fire.

This. And that's why everyone should know about what's going on in their company at all time. They should know how the company is doing, stock price, pay attention to articles about it etc. any signs of distress start looking for another job because they will reject you from your seat before you even buckle your seat belt. Your 20+ years there doesn't mean sh**t to them. You are simply an entry with a number on a spreadsheet. Never ever be loyal to any company never. Only be loyal to yourself.
