OP here. Our HS makes you take French 5 prior to AP French. Otherwise she would have just taken AP French Jr year. But yes the class exists.

They prefer you take the highest level offered at your school.

But the middle school classes will appear on her high school transcript

UVA does not look at middle school.

I know of a few kids like this but they’re all in the engineering school.

We recently did a transcript review through the uva alumni association and the person we met with stressed they were looking for 4 years of foreign language. Common data set says it’s 2 required/ 4 recommended. It’s holistic so probably fine. Hope someone can answer your question!

OP here. She has 5 years of French but 1 and 2 were taken (for HS credit) in middle school. That’s what’s confusing. Is it 4 years or all years?

Did she max out and there are no more French classes at the high school? That’s different from her deciding not to take the hardest class offered.

OP’s first post makes it pretty clear she could take AP foreign language but it conflicts with the bio research. It sounds like the school offers up to level 5 of the language in addition to AP. Our school has that as well.

FL is a big deal for them, but I think if there is a good reason why someone didn't continue it, that's fine. I would spell it out for them though.

+1

FL, and having four years of it *in high school*, is a big deal for UVA but not an absolute dealbreaker. Include a sentence or two in the more info section about how AP FL conflicted with the opportunity for the bio research, and she decided in favor of the bio because she reached level 5 of her FL already.

Yes. Good to explain that she chose the bio research.

Yep. An engineering student, rising second year.

My gut tells me UVA likes to see AP classes in all 5 core areas Senior year. They consider FL to be a "core" area.

Did they have another hook?

My DD’s stats and rigor have her in range for UVA ED but she is not currently planning to take AP foreign language. She will have pretty much all the other “top” APs and 5 years of language. She would have to drop a selective independent research class in her desired field (bio) to take AP foreign language or enroll in a virtual DE class.

Thoughts? Anecdotes? We know a UVA “reader” who says there is a literal box she checks for 12th grade foreign language.
