OP here. She has 5 years of French but 1 and 2 were taken (for HS credit) in middle school. That’s what’s confusing. Is it 4 years or all years?
Did she max out and there are no more French classes at the high school? That’s different from her deciding not to take the hardest class offered.

FL is a big deal for them, but I think if there is a good reason why someone didn't continue it, that's fine. I would spell it out for them though.

FL, and having four years of it *in high school*, is a big deal for UVA but not an absolute dealbreaker. Include a sentence or two in the more info section about how AP FL conflicted with the opportunity for the bio research, and she decided in favor of the bio because she reached level 5 of her FL already.
