Cheapskating on legal advice is rarely prudent; it is even more dangerous when the consequences of a miscalculation can be disastrous. Elder lawyer fees typically are pretty reasonable for an initial consult and planning assessment. Expecting anyone to work for free is unreasonable, although an initial query might be no charge.


Not sure if OP is a cheapskate or not, but This advice is good. It’s also great that DCUM can help direct her to Info online so that they can research a beforehand and prepare questions to get more out of the initial consults..

I was in this specialty but I stopped working too long ago to know what’s going on right now. Every state has their own regulations so I agree, get an elder law attorney from Maryland. NAELA is a good place to start. The worst thing you could do is go to an attorney who does not specialize in elder law. They can really mess you up.

Know that Medicaid does a look back period. So be careful about depleting bank accounts in order to become eligible. There are certain expenses that you can pay but you can’t give away money.

Its very low. Maybe a few thousand at best and the income level is even lower. Years ago, my inlaw got $1K in social security and was denied but got food stamps.

How much money one can have in the bank if a senior who is over 80 years old with spouse apply for Medicaid in Maryland? My dad has to apply for Medicaid as he doesn’t have enough money to pay his Medicare premium.
