I have done this sort of thing and I give a way out just in case. Just as a I respect my own child's right to decide a friendship is no longer right for him, I respect other kid's rights. I might say "Larlo remembers your son fondly and valued that friendship. He is coming back to the district and would love to reconnect, but we completely understand if your son is hesitant and it's fine if he declines or you don't feel comfortable." Even teens with SN want to decide on their friendships and don't always want parents involved. If he knows it's a choice and not a "have to" he may be more willing to get together.

My 13 yo ds is going back in district after being in an out of district placement for 2 years. I want him to reconnect with some nice kids in district. He used to be good friends with a boy he lost touch with after leaving. I’m still good friends with the mom and see her regularly. Is it weird if I reach out to her to try to get together with the kids? I don’t want to seem too babyish, like I’m setting up a playdate
