It may be useful to have time for a Target run after move in for any last-minute additional items. Other than that, in most cases you would leave right away. This depends in part on what the move in schedule looks like at the particular college. For my oldest, the goodbye was right after move in, literally two hours after the start of the time slot. For my others, the process was a little more flexible. My youngest had orientation start in the evening after moving in that morning and there was a tradition the following morning that involved students doing a walk and parents then saying goodbye at that time.

Highly dependent on college. Ours has move in on Sunday. Some informal family events that night. Family programming Monday morning, including a pretty formal welcoming event (kind of bookends graduation). Parents leave by 2pm.

Mine are only 2 hrs and 3 hrs away. Did not stay overnight. However, we made sure to plan a weekend home over Labor Day so they had something to look forward to, and fall break in early October. Helps to come home and get things they didn’t anticipate, and just get sleep/food!

No. We stayed the night before because move in was early ish and we wanted to make a run to target and container store first. It did take some time to assemble stuff but then she definitely wanted us out of her hair. We didn’t even take her to dinner. I did unpack her because I’m much better at organizing than she is and I hoped that if I set up a rational system to start maybe she could stick with it.

We're moving my freshman into her dorm on a Friday afternoon. I figured we'd stay in her college town on Friday night but return home late Saturday (2 hour drive).

Is there any reason we should stay an additional night? (other than my emotions )
